Natural Hair Tutorial: How To Pre-Poo

If your hair feels rough, dry, brittle, and crunchy (especially your ends) you should consider a pre-poo. It really really does wonders for the health of your hair. Since starting pre-poos a few months ago, I am addicted!

I start off by sectioning my hair down the middle into 2 large parts. Then I start off with one side, breaking it down into smaller sections. I saturate the hair with water from my spray bottle. I finger detangle gently. I add LOTS of oil to the section concentrating on my ends. Then I add a good amount of conditioner. Rub it through very well. Then detangle with my Denman brush. I twist the section up and repeat with the rest of my hair.

When all of my hair has been pre-pooed, I pin my hair to the top of my head and sit under my huetiful steamer for about 20-30 minutes. And Im done.

I wash my hair with the twists in and it takes minutes in comparison to the time it took before!

I just added pre-pooing to my regimen and its great! I discovered that, for me, it’s best when I use thicker oils ( coconut, avacado, castor) and apply the oil to dry hair instead of wet. I also just discovered the Herbal Essences Hello Hydrations conditioner. Works great and affordable! Thanks for the video!

Hey there!! I must say I love the video and found it very helpful and pushed me over the edge to go ahead and get the steamer. I have only used it once but I love it. I had a quick question. I noticed you say that you use it once per week as part of your routine. Are you noticing any bad effects from using it that often? Such as it getting to soft or falling out etc. Thanks so much for your help. Love the videos and website. I know its a big challenge to keep up as a new mom 🙂

Thats very nice of you sis. Im glad I could help you out. Im working on getting you ladies a discount for the steamer, hopefully sometime this month.

I havent noticed any bad side effects, If I did, I would have stopped using it, for sure.

Mommy hood and this site are both important parts of my life, so I make time for them both you know?

Do you see the value in the steamer? Thinking about getting one… and for TWA’s who can’t 2 strand twist what do you suggest after sit under dryer/steamer? Wash and then do your usual (for me its 2 strand)…

I am still working on having a regime that works for me. I am going to at pre-pooing today. Do you pre-poo everytime you wash your hair? Do your pre-poo even when you are doing a deep condition?
I have been natural for 2 years this Sept 3. One mistake that I have made waas going to get my hair blown out to be trimmed. I have only gotten it done twice, but as a result a large part of my hair is now heat damaged and I hate it! I too am a new mom so I have been experiencing breakage along the edges but also throughout my hair, do you have any advise for me to get my hair back on track?

      Hey love,

I prepoo before because this is also my detangling process. So I do it before every wash.
So sorry about your heat damage. I know that has to be so upsetting.

As for your edges, postpartum is a mess! Did you see the article on postpartum shedding?

I need more clarification on the shampoo process. You actually leave the twists in and rinse conditioner/oil out and then apply cowash and conditioner directly to the twists?

I wear my hair straight even if I’ve been natural for a long time. I have breakage I believe is due to heat styling. Do you think I can use oils overnight and then use a mask in the morning as part of my pre poo regimen?
